Things to do this weekend... Make a phone call

Please take a moment this weekend to call the members of the education committee at home.

The weekend is a great chance to make contact with the legislators.  Start here to learn more about the issue.  Then, go to this link and look up your legislator.  Make a quick phone call encouraging the members of the education committee to stop SB 24.

Here is a sample of what you can say:

My name is ___________ and I'm a teacher and a parent from ___________.  Teachers are interested in improving education, but SB 24 will not address the real challenges in education today.
SB 24 would place too much emphasis on testing and would water down education requirements for teacher certification.
In addition, the bill diverts too many resources to expand the role of privately-run, for-profit charter schools even though studies show that charters are no more effective than traditional public schools at closing the achievement gap 83% of the time.
We need reform that strengthens the public school system, not reform that diverts resources away to private companies.  We need reform that strengthens the professionalism of our teachers, not reform which reduces the requirements for highly trained teachers.
Please listen to what teachers are saying about our classrooms and how this bill will effect us.
Thank you for your time.
