State Rep. says Ed. Comm. Chairs changing SB 24 "in private"

From a state rep. on the Education Committee:

However, my committees chairs haven't allowed the committee to discuss changes to the bill. Since the two days of public hearings weeks ago we are still waiting for the chairs to allow us to screen the bill.

Bill screening is when the committee discusses the bill and makes changes. What's more frustrating is we are coming toward the deadline.

I've been requesting the chairs of the education committee bring out the bill for debate, other members have been doing the same.
It's as if they're working on it in private. With the deadline for bills to be voted out of committee fast approaching, I'm concerned we will have little time to discuss changes.

My caucus had a long meeting with the Commissioner to ask questions last week. Much of what the Commissioner said sounded good, but wasn't written the same way in the bill, so it left most of us with more questions than answers.

There's parts of the bill that I think are good, and parts that aren't. The bill also lacks specific details on evaluations, certification, salary schedules among other things.

I recently met with the FEA to discuss the bill and hear their concerns. I've also heard from many teachers through email.

However, at this point, we are still waiting to see what changes the leadership of the education committee is going to bring out for the full committee to debate and discuss.

I'm care about education and was hoping the Education Committee would be working everyday with all stakeholders to come up with a good bill...
