Stamford Teacher Grades Malloy's Education Bill: "Last week, Gov. Malloy announced plans to “toughen standards for teacher education”, with the implication that current teachers aren’t doing a good enough job. If only better students had chosen to become teachers, the achievement gap would be closed, all children would be well-behaved, and nobody would need free lunch. As a teacher who was high school valedictorian, went to college on a merit scholarship, and graduated magna cum laude, I resent that insinuation. On the contrary, people who choose to become teachers are generally those who enjoyed school as students. My colleagues and I are knowledgeable about our individual subject areas; we also keep up with ever-changing instructional practices. It’s a job for patient and compassionate people who value learning – not for sad sacks seeking the easiest way to limp through college."
