ConnCAN call to action

This was sent out today by ConnCAN:

WATCH OUT! CONNCAN IS STILL STIRRING THINGS UP!

THEY ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS!

As we speak, the Education Committee is considering modifications to Senate Bill 24. The changes being debated represent a pathetic attempt at “compromise.” Read the Hartford Courant’s new editorial to learn more.

It appears that in the Committee’s language, major components of the bill (quite frankly, the parts that matter the most) are at risk of either being watered down or put aside until next year.

How did these changes from the original proposals come up? They were developed in negotiations with teachers unions, without any other stakeholders in the room. The coalition of the status quo may prevail in weakening what was the boldest education package in Connecticut’s history.

The Committee is still working through the details, and we are holding on to a glimmer of hope that members will find the courage to stand up for real reform. Governor Malloy put down a bold marker on February 8th, and legislators have the opportunity to work with him to reinforce Connecticut’s commitment to our students.

Regardless of what comes out of committee tonight, legislators have until May 9th to work out the details – now is not the time to be complacent. So please: keep an eye out for emails from us, and when we give you an opportunity to take action, join us.

My best,

Patrick Riccards
