We're Being Conned! Can You Help?

Here are some recent quotes from our governor:

"“One of the things I say to folks when they’re critical of any portion of [the bill] … I ask if they have a child,” Malloy said. “And then when they say that they do, I say, ‘Now tell me, when that child was in school was there ever a teacher in any one of the buildings your child attended that you wanted your child to avoid having?... Listen I had teachers growing up ... I had a teacher who was an alcoholic,” Malloy said. “You probably knew a teacher in one of the buildings you went to who was an alcoholic and as a result was not a very good teacher. And yet the person remained in the building for, you know, the rest of their career.””

Please take a minute out of your day to send Governor Malloy and your state senator and representative a quick email today, letting them know that you are a teacher and parent who does not support SB24. We need to be sending emails consistently about a wide range of topics on the bill. If our legislators do not receive a large volume of communication, how can they make the right decision come voting time?

We have drafted a quick sample message you could send along. Feel free to use it in its entirety, borrow from it, or create your own! If you voted for the governor, you might want to throw that in. We can be a strong union if we all act! We have the power to send over 500 emails to our legislators today!

Sample Message:

I am a Connecticut teacher and a proud parent of Connecticut public school children. I strongly oppose SB24, as it stands for creating teachers who are not lifelong learners and creating a schooling system where children are subjected to more and more standardized testing and teaching to the test. I am offended by the governor’s comments about teachers just having to show up to earn tenure and his suggestion that his bill will save children from alcoholic teachers. This gross misinformation of our current due process and teacher certification laws demonstrate the Governor is not a person who understands—or cares to understand—how public schools operate to foster positive learning communities for our students. Please say no to SB24!
