Hugh Bailey: Public schools are worth the price - Connecticut Post

It is important to remember that Vallas was handpicked by Pryor--so I assume that Pryor shares this philosophy.  Vallas goes into a public schools system & guts it (see Philadelphia) then moves on without having to live with the consequences of his decisions.  He is currently getting paid in CT for his work as superintendent of schools in Bridgeport but he is also getting $1million for his consulting in Chicago--a district he already "fixed."  I wonder what would happen if that money was reinvested in public schools.

Hugh Bailey: Public schools are worth the price - Connecticut Post: "It was stated succinctly by a noted reformer two years ago: "I don't want the majority of my staff to work more than 10 years. The cost of sustaining those individuals becomes so enormous. Between retirement and health care and things like that, it means that you are constantly increasing class sizes and cutting programs in order to sustain the cost of a veteran work force, so I think you want a mix, you want a balance."

That was Paul Vallas as superintendent of the New Orleans Recovery School District, speaking to a BBC reporter. Vallas today is superintendent of Bridgeport schools, and is by every account a tireless worker in the midst of a complete overhaul of the long-troubled district. And what he said is true -- teachers do get more expensive over time.

Many also get better at their jobs. School reform, in general, doesn't account for that.
