Call the Education Committee

Attached you will find the list of legislators and their office phone numbers.  The goal of mass phone calling is to increase the pressure on the Education Committee to fix proposals in  Governor’s Education Bill #24 that would weaken high-quality education for our students. The focus should be on organizing building and and/or local association governance structures or configurations (entire local, building representatives take back to buildings, grade levels, elementary, middle, and high school) to make calls this week. Please encourage those who do not have Education Committee members to call, to call their own legislators to ask that he/she share the call with their Education Committee colleagues. PLEASE REPORT TO SUEF@CEA.ORG THE ESTIMATED # OF CALLS MADE DURING THE WEEK.

SMILE on the calls. It is more persuasive.

Script Education Committee:

My name is ___________________, I teach in ________________ .

As your constituent, I urge you to fix proposals in the Governor’s Education Bill #24, that would hurt, not help, public education in Connecticut.  I am asking you to make changes to the bill that will: (select a few or all)
·        Restore collective bargaining rights
·        Separate evaluation from certification and salary schedules
·        Maintain the Master’s Degree for a  Professional Certificate
·        Restore local control rather than enabling decisions about local schools to be made by the state education commissioner
·        Preserve scarce resources for neighborhood schools instead of diverting local tax dollars to charter schools that don’t have the same standards

As a teacher, I want high standards, accountability, and education reform done the right way—smaller class sizes, adequate school funding, more parental involvement and other reforms teachers are supporting in our reform plan—A View from the Classroom.

Teachers lead classrooms every day and truly care about improving the quality of our public schools and preparing our students for tomorrow’s challenges.
Thank you for your hard work and I appreciate your consideration.

Script Other Legislators:

My name is ____________________. I teach in ____________________.

I know you are not a member of the Education Committee, but as your constituent, I am asking  you to share my message of concern with your colleagues on the Education Committee. Please ask them to make changes to the Governor’s Education Bill #24, so that it does not damage public education in Connecticut.  Members of the Education Committee should make changes to the bill that will: (select a few or all)
·        Restore collective bargaining rights
·        Separate evaluation from certification and salary schedules
·        Maintain the Master’s Degree for a  Professional Certificate
·        Restore local control rather than enabling decisions about local schools to be made by the state education commissioner
·        Preserve scarce resources for neighborhood schools instead of diverting local tax dollars to charter schools that don’t have the same standards

As an educator, I strive for high standards and accountability. I want education reform, but it must be done the right way—with smaller classes sizes, adequate school funding, more parental involvement, and other proven reform methods outlined in the teacher’s plan A View from the Classroom.

Teachers truly care about improving the quality of our public schools and preparing students for tomorrow’s challenges. I hope you will encourage your colleagues on the Education Committee to make changes in the Governor’s Education Bill #24 that will get education reform done in the right way.

Thank you for your hard work and I appreciate your consideration.
