From a TEA member:
· All classes are not created equal. The hand a teacher is dealt from year to year can potentially play unfavorably.
· Parent/student input is factored into a percentage of teacher eval, yet students and parents are not held to any accountability in their own responsibility toward schooling. Their performance (or lack of it) will impact a teacher’s evaluation. How many times do parents pull kids out for vacation in the middle of the school year? Do not follow up on their child’s lack of effort, etc? It’s not often, but it still happens and that’s a percentage of our evaluation.
· Finally, how about the district’s insistence that teachers use the district’s bought (canned) programs for teaching, which do not always provide the best practices and can result in lower student performance. Case in point is the recent lower district scores in Math (Grade 5) and the timing of the new math program.
I have no problem being evaluated on my own merit, but I feel this new proposed eval system is not totally fair.
Just some thoughts.
